The process involves printing ink onto a PVC substrate, followed by roller-coating with UV lacquer and subsequent curing.

The quality of the ink determines how realistic the wood-grain effect on the edge banding appears. Market prices for ink currently range from 20 to 160 RMB per kilogram; using high-quality ink results in edge banding that closely resembles the actual board material, offers rich printing depth, and shows no significant indoor fading within three years. Edge banding with rich visual depth is typically produced using three-color printing, followed by two-color and single-color methods.

Testing method: Expose edge banding samples printed with different inks to intense sunlight for one week; comparing them to their pre-exposure state reveals differences in the degree of fading. The abrasion resistance and transparency of wood-grain edge banding are closely linked to the quality of the UV lacquer. Market prices for UV lacquer range from 50 to 120 RMB per kilogram; if the edge banding surface scratches easily or appears hazy, it indicates the use of inferior UV lacquer. The strength of the bond between the edge banding and the board-as well as the adhesion between the edge banding and the hot-melt adhesive-depends on the quality of the back-coating adhesive.

Bonding the board and edge banding requires specific temperature conditions. Although the hot-melt adhesive in the edge bander's reservoir is heated to between 180°C and 200°C, there is a gap of 20–30 cm between the point where the adhesive is applied to the board and the point where it bonds with the edge banding. Due to low workshop temperatures and rapid heat loss, the actual temperature at the bonding point often drops below 120°C, resulting in suboptimal adhesion. Using poor-quality back-coating adhesive (market price: 18–50 RMB/kg) further increases the risk of the bond failing. Solution: Since moving boards from a cold area for cutting can result in low edge temperatures that impair adhesion, the workshop temperature should be maintained above 15°C, and a constant-temperature cover should be installed over the edge bander's banding coil holder.
