Low water-absorption formulations mitigate moisture-related risks
By optimizing the plasticizer system and incorporating hydrophobic additives, the water absorption rate of PVC edge banding is reduced from the typical ~0.5% to a range of 0.15%–0.3%. ABS, which inherently possesses a water absorption rate of ≤0.1%, offers superior dimensional stability in high-humidity environments. A slower rate of moisture absorption provides extended protection for the edges of panels, making them less susceptible to swelling or deformation caused by gradual water ingress.
Co-extruded waterproof layers provide a secondary barrier
High-end moisture-resistant edge banding utilizes a dual-layer co-extrusion process. The core-composed of PVC or ABS-ensures flexibility and ease of processing, while an additional layer of modified polyolefin or polyethylene (PE) is applied to the surface or back to serve as a waterproof barrier. In immersion tests lasting over 72 hours, these products show no swelling, delamination, or adhesive failure, making them ideal for areas prone to standing water, such as cabinetry beneath sinks.
Anti-mold and antibacterial additives inhibit fungal growth
Certain moisture-resistant edge bands incorporate anti-mold and antibacterial agents. These products meet the ASTM G21 standard for fungal resistance (achieving a Grade 0 rating, indicating no visible mold growth). They are particularly well-suited for damp environments-such as bathroom vanities or sink cabinets-where mold is likely to thrive, helping to prevent the edges from darkening or becoming moldy.
