Waterproof or Moisture Resistant Edge Banding is a functional edge banding material specifically designed for high-humidity environments and frequent water contact. Its core function is to prevent moisture penetration over a long period, prevent the edges of the board from absorbing water and swelling, and prevent the edge banding from peeling off or deforming due to moisture. In terms of performance levels, it can be divided into "moisture-proof" (blocks daily moisture and occasional splashes) and "waterproof" (can withstand long-term immersion and frequent rinsing). The latter usually needs to pass a water immersion test (e.g., no cracking or delamination after 24-72 hours of immersion).

Waterproof Material and Structure Design – Blocking Moisture at the Source

Low Absorption Substrate: ABS or PP materials (water absorption ≤ 0.1%) are preferred. PVC materials (approximately 0.5%) still pose a slight risk of swelling during long-term use in high-humidity environments.
Dual-Color Co-extruded Waterproof Layer: Some high-end products utilize a co-extrusion process, adding a layer of pure waterproof material (such as PE or modified polyolefin) to the back of the edge banding, forming a second waterproof barrier.
Full Coverage Structure: U-shaped or C-shaped edge banding can simultaneously wrap the front, edges, and partial back of the board, achieving a three-sided seal and preventing moisture from seeping in from the edges and back.
Thickened Design for Enhanced Protection: A thickness of 1.0-2.0mm is recommended. Thicker edge banding provides a longer path for moisture penetration, resulting in superior waterproof performance compared to thinner products.

Bonding and Sealing Process Requirements • Ensure Long-Term Leak-Proof Application

PUR Adhesive Preferred: PUR hot melt adhesive cross-links and cures upon contact with moisture; its bonding strength actually increases when immersed in water, making it an ideal partner for waterproof edge sealing.
Laser Edge Sealing Optional: Laser edge sealing achieves molecular-level fusion, eliminating the need for separate adhesive layers and completely removing the risk of water seepage through the adhesive seams, providing the highest level of waterproofing.
Adhesive Application Control: Waterproof edge sealing requires 15%-20% more adhesive than ordinary edge sealing to ensure the adhesive layer completely fills the tiny gaps between the board and the edge sealing strip.
