More Furniture Customers Are Choosing Sample-Based Edge Banding Color Matching

Over the past few months, we have noticed a clear change in the way customers select edge banding.

Instead of choosing only from an existing color chart, more furniture manufacturers and material distributors are sending us their own board samples, color cards or decorative paper for matching.

This is especially common with wood grain finishes. Two colors may look almost identical in a photo, but once the edge banding is applied to the board, small differences in tone, grain or gloss become much easier to see.

Why Customers Send Their Own Samples

Furniture factories often work with boards from different suppliers. Even when two boards have similar names-oak, walnut, ash or grey-the actual surface can be quite different.

A photo sent through WhatsApp or email is useful for an initial reference, but it is usually not enough for final color confirmation.

Lighting, camera settings and phone screens can all change the way a color appears.

For this reason, we normally prefer to work from a physical sample when a customer requires a close match.

The sample can be a small piece of board, decorative paper or an existing edge banding color. Once received, our team can compare the base color, surface finish and wood grain before preparing the matching sample.

Color Is Only Part of the Match

One point that is sometimes overlooked is gloss.

For example, a PVC edge banding may have the correct brown or grey tone, but if its surface is much glossier than the board, the difference will still be noticeable after application.

Wood grain presents another challenge. The depth of the printed grain, pattern contrast and overall texture all affect how well the edge works with the panel.

That is why we look at the complete surface rather than comparing only one color value.

Sample Confirmation Before Production

For customized colors, we prefer to prepare a sample for confirmation before moving to regular production.

This adds an extra step, but it can prevent a much larger problem later.

Finding a color difference after hundreds or thousands of meters have already been produced is costly for both sides. Confirming the sample first makes the process much more predictable.

For repeat orders, keeping an approved reference sample also helps us compare future production batches with the original requirement.

Supporting Different Board Collections

Our customers work with many different board brands and local collections, and the colors used in one market are not always the same as those used in another.

Rather than limiting customers to a fixed catalog, sample-based matching gives furniture manufacturers and distributors more flexibility when they introduce new board designs.
